Description:
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine and metabolic disorder characterized by excessive androgen secretion and is linked with obesity, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, and affects up to 17% of women in reproductive age. We have also demonstrated that women with PCOS have epigenetic and transcriptional changes in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue relevant for development of disease3,4. We have also shown that a single bout of electroacupuncture increases whole-body glucose uptake in overweight and obese women with PCOS by activation of the sympathetic and partly the parasympathetic nervous systems. It is known that a single bout of exercise induce rapid transcriptional and epigenetic changes in skeletal muscle. We have found that a single bout of electroacupuncture, in addition to increase whole-body glucose uptake, also remodels epigenetic and transcriptional changes in adipose tissue and skeletal muscle mimicking a single bout of exercise.
The idea of "experts coming together to produce change" inspired a research project designed to investigate how acupuncture and TCM reproductive specialists approach the treatment of PCOS in their clinics. This presentation reveals these new insights, which includes interesting quantitative data on acupuncture points selection and valuable qualitative reasoning for those choices which will contribute to 1.) demonstrate to colleagues and other healthcare practitioners how acupuncturists treat PCOS in their TCM clinics, and 2.) inform future clinical research by contributing to trial design with aspects of dosage and point selection.
This lecture will share the basis for the development of this condition as well as how it is diagnosed. With a thorough understanding of the multisystem nature of PCOS, a multi-disciplinary team can collaborate to best meet the patient’s immediate needs as well working to reduce long term health risks associated with the condition.
