Description:

This online lecture is for the Integrative Fertility Symposium (IFS) 2021, and brings together recent research information regarding the common genetic link between endometriosis, depression and gut issues. This lecture will provide the basis for the link between these conditions and an explanatory model of systemic inflammation. This will link to autoimmune conditions and inflammation generally as seen through a TCM lens, and the research evidence for acupuncture in the treatment of these conditions. Kate will describe case studies and common clinical findings that support the research literature linking these conditions.

By the end of the webinar, participants will have the ability to:

• Describe the causal pathway of inflammation that links conditions of endometriosis, depression and gut issues.
• Understand the role of inflammation in autoimmune conditions generally

Description:

Endometriosis is a complicated chronic inflammatory condition. When patients are successful at conceiving, some are able to improve their endometriosis whilst others find it worsens and can develop into adenomyosis.  Both conditions require a few key etiological considerations for treatment that reflect the sophistication and complexity of the conditions. Endometriosis and adenomyosis are both multifactorial and comprehensive by nature and are often simplified by clinicians which produce poor outcomes and reduced treatment success. The interplay between many aspects including the immune system, infective triggers, peritoneal fluid and the endocannabinoid system can have profound impact to the microbiome, methylation, epigenetics, inflammatory processes and endocrinological variables important in the progression and escalation of these conditions.

Learning Objectives:

• Participants will understand the role of the immune system and infective drivers in both the development and prevention of adenomyosis and endometriosis
• Participants will understand the interrelationship of the immune system and infective drivers and their roles in inter-generational health outcomes
• Participants will understand the inflammatory nature of the conditions and the subsequent impact to the peritoneal fluid, epigenetic drivers and methylation corruption
• Participants will acquire strategic and sophisticated treatment strategies to effectively manage their patients’ health and prevent recurrence or progression of these diseases
